FMTC Tips and Tricks - How do I use my personal WEB SPACE?

  1. Call FMTC Internet and ask them to activate your personal WEB SPACE. (674-4241)
  2. Download an FTP client (I recommend SmartFTP). This is the utility that will let you transfer your files onto the server. Once you get the FTP client downloaded, familiarize yourself with the settings on your FTP Client and read any instructions that accompany it.
  3. Find where to put the server name, username, and password. For the server name, enter ftp.fmtc.com. The username and password are the same ones you use to access FMTC Internet. Push the connect button. This will put you into your home directory.
  4. When you get into your home directory, you will see two folders. The FTP folder is a place you can store downloadable data. Anything you put into this folder will be accessible to everyone on the Internet. Things that are stored in the FTP folder will be available at ftp.fmtc.com/username.
  5. The public_html folder is where you want all of your web page data. Your main page needs to be called index.htm or index.html and located in the public_html folder. Your personal web page can be accessed at www.fmtc.com/~username. If you have any questions, just call 674-4241.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much storage comes with my personal web space?
A: You are allowed 5 Megabytes with your Internet account.

Q: Can I use FrontPage?
A: You can build your web page with FrontPage but you cannot use the publishing tools that come with FrontPage (unless we're hosting a domain for you and we've enabled Frontpage extensions on that web folder). Otherwise, you will need an FTP client. Sorry, but your free, personal web space doesn't support FrontPage extensions. This means any CGI-type scripts won't work (i.e. Hit Counters).

Q: What happens if I use more that 5 Megabytes of space?
A: You will be charged $5 per month for every additional 5 Megabytes.

Q: Can I use my personal web space for E-commerce?
A: No. E-commerce traffic taxes our free web server too much. If you need an E-commerce site, please talk to one of our representatives about purchasing a domain name. We host domain names on a different web server capable of higher traffic rates. Also, with a domain name, you will be able to use FrontPage extensions and advanced scripts.
