FMTC Tips and Tricks - How to add an identity using "Outlook Express"

If you have signed up for more than one email account with us and you're using Outlook Express to get your mail, then you have a choice in how that second email box is set up. The easiest way to set up the account dumps the mail from both addresses into the same Inbox, but if you'd like to have separate Inboxes for each of your Email addresses, then I'll explain how to make it happen.

  • In Outlook Express, click on 'file' up at the top of the window. Now move the cursor down to 'identities' and then choose the 'add identity' option.
  • In the new field that pops up, type in the new Email address. If you want to secure this new inbox with a password and keep the new inbox private, make sure to checkmark the 'require password' box.
  • Now, Outlook should ask you if you'd like to switch to the new identity. Select 'yes'.  
  • >At this point, Outlook will shut itself down and then open itself back up with the new identity. All of the new mail folders (inbox, sent, deleted items) will be empty because this identity has never been used.
  • One of the first things that will happen when Outlook comes back is that the Internet Connection Wizard should appear and guide you through setting up the new account. Just follow the directions through this wizard and when you get done, you should be ready to go.
  • Things to remember: Your Email address, account name, server names, and password should all be lower case. If it asks what kind of mail server you want, you should choose 'POP3'. The name of our incoming mail server is mail.fmtc.com and our outgoing mail server (SMTP) is smtp.fmtc.com Your "account name", when it asks for it, is only the first portion of your email address -everything before the '@fmtc.com'.

  • When you want to switch back to your other identity, go up to the top of Outlook Express and click on 'file' and then choose 'switch identity' on that menu. Please be aware that the first Email box that was set up in Outlook Express will be called 'main identity' unless you go to file->manage identites and change the name of the 'main identity' to something else.
  • Be aware that if you delete an identity, you're also deleting all the mail that that particular identity had stored in it.
